Gard Jameson

Gard Jameson received his PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2005 and his BA from Stanford University in Religious Studies in 1975. He spent 25 years professionally as a CPA, CFP, and Financial Planner. He is a professor of Asian Philosophy at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is the author of five books, The Beatitudes, (a reflection on the key attitudes to a meaningful life), The Peace Pilgrim Pictures, (a reflection through the art of Nicolas Roerich upon the spiritual journey), and Phaethon, Monkey, and Ramayana: Our Mythic Moment, the last three books reflecting upon three grand epics from the West, China and India and the lessons that they have to teach about our relationship to each other, to the earth, and to something larger than ourselves. He and his wife, Florence, cofounded Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada, VMSN.org, along with community benefactors, a charitable clinic that has provided free medical, dental, and mental healthcare to those without access for over 15 years. He serves on the board of the Charter for Compassion, CharterForCompassion.org, with over 400 global communities adopting Compassion as their premier value, including Compassionate Las Vegas, with the blessing of the City Mayors and Council, CompassionateLV.org. He has two precious daughter, MJ and Julia… and has been married to his best friend, Dr. Florence Jameson, for 43 years… they met when he was 15 and she 14 years old! And, that is another story!

Penny Clements

Penny Clements is a CBCT® (Cognitively Based Compassion Training) Senior Teacher and a Facilitator for the CBCT Teacher Certification Program at Emory University. Since 2016, Penny has taught CBCT to a variety of audiences, including public and private school teachers and administrators, healthcare professionals, college students, cancer survivors, and others. Prior to her work in the field of compassion, she had a 15-year career in marketing and development for public television and radio stations at local, state, and national levels. Penny enjoys sharing CBCT as a means to promote living with less stress and more joy.

Overview

Begin the compassion training journey. In the Overview, we deepen our understanding of what compassion is, why it is valuable, and CBCT's approach to training it. We explore the relationship between compassion and resilience and engage in practices to strengthen self-regulation skills.

M1: Connecting to a Moment of Nurturance

Build a strong foundation and strengthen motivation. In Module 1, we connect to nurturing moments to elicit feelings of safety and deepen our appreciation for compassion. This module is considered foundational to CBCT, as it supports both the resilience and the motivation to train compassion.

M2: Developing Stable and Clear Attention

Learn practices to improve focus and resilience. In Module 2, we learn to hold our attention where we choose. We train the emotion regulation strategy of attention deployment, as we strengthen the ability to notice when attention is pulled, to redirect it, and to keep it where we want it to be.
